Poynton’s Conservative councillors – Jos Saunders, Mike Beanland and Mike Sewart – are concerned that Cheshire East have so far not complied with Freedom of Information (FoI) laws regarding their proposed works at Poynton Pool.
Cheshire East wants to increase the height of the dam, which may mean cutting down almost ninety trees. The chairman of Cheshire East’s Economy and Growth Committee, Cllr N Mannion (Labour - Macclesfield) has publicly endorsed the scheme.
It is not clear why Cheshire East are dragging their feet over a straightforward FoI request. Poynton Town Council have asked for documents including the consulting engineer’s report and details of how Cheshire East arrived at their decision to supposedly reduce the risk of flooding in such an environmentally destructive way. Were any other options considered?
To get a “second opinion” on the scheme, Conservative run Poynton Town Council has appointed a qualified engineer to visit the Pool, review the proposed works and consider alternative approaches to managing any risk of flooding. The Pool is more than 250 years old but has never flooded - not even when exceptionally heavy rain caused floods across Poynton in 2016 and 2019.
