PCC 2024

CHESHIRE POLICE & CRIME COMMISSIONER ELECTION May 2024.

Labour's Dan Price has been elected as Cheshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner.

  • Dan Price (Labour) – 86,279 (48.1%)

  • John Dwyer (Conservative) – 65,836 (36.7%)

  • Paul Duffy (Liberal Democrat) – 27,342 (15.2%)

The Area covered by the PCC includes Cheshire East, Cheshire West & Chester, Warrington and Halton.

Winning this time was always going to be hard for our candidate, the outgoing PCC John Dwyer, when the Labour heartlands of Warrington and Halton also had all-out Council elections, which always increases voter turnout.

In Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester, where there were no other elections taking place, turnout was low (just 19.3% and 19.6% respectively).

Interestingly, across the Cheshire East Borough, John Dwyer polled over 3,000 more votes than the Labour Candidate, although clearly not nearly enough to win overall.

John Dwyer (Conservative) who held the role from 2021 to 2024, and previously from 2012 to 2016, will be a very hard act to follow.

Under John’s experienced leadership, (he was a former Deputy Chief Constable), he led Cheshire policing through the pandemic, re-building the decimated police numbers and re-dressing the decline in solving crime and excessive spending resulting from Labour’s last PCC incumbent during 2017 - 2021.

Just last week, new figures released by the Office for National Statistics showed that Cheshire is currently one of the safest places across England and Wales, with a 6.8% reduction in the number of recorded crimes, in stark contrast to the national average decrease of just 0.9% - the second consecutive year that crime has fallen in Cheshire.

Some voters have questioned the role of Police & Crime Commissioners, but since the development of the role, effective PCCs have played a critical role in holding their chief constable to account on behalf of residents, setting the police budget, commissioning services for victims of crime, and setting the strategic direction for their Constabulary through their Police and Crime Plan.

For the sake of Cheshire Residents, we wish the new PCC well, but his will be a steep learning curve and only time will tell if he is up to the formidable task of keeping Cheshire safe.
