Cheshire East Council has secured more than £150,000 Government funding to install electric vehicle charging points as part of the Government’s On-Street Residential Charge Point Scheme for 2022-23.
The purpose of the scheme is to increase the availability of on-street chargepoints in residential streets where off-street parking is not available, thereby ensuring that on-street parking is not a barrier to realising the benefits of owning an EV.
Car park-based projects
The scheme is primarily focused on the installation of chargepoints in on-street locations. However, Government recognise the pressures that may be faced by local authorities when allocating parking spaces for EVs on residential streets.
Therefore, the Government have considered applications for chargepoints situated in car parks owned by Cheshire East Council.
As a result electric vehicle charging infrastructure will be located at 15 locations in 12 towns across the borough. This includes a mix of on street locations and in public car parks close to residential areas and work is expected to start during the current financial year.
The locations are as follows:
- Snow Hill Car Park, in Nantwich.
- Fairview Car Park, Alsager
- Antrobus Street Car Park, Congleton
- Southway Car Park, Middlewich
- Chapel Street Car Park, Sandbach
- The Carrs Car Park, Wilmslow.
- Wrexham Terrace Car Park, Bulkeley Street, Edleston Road Car Park and Hope Street Car Park are four sites identified in Crewe
- King Street Car Park and Tatton Street Car Park are two sites identified in Knutsford
- Brook Street, Churchill Way Car Park and Whalley Hayes Car Park are three sites identified in Macclesfield
The council applied for funding from the on-street residential charge point scheme in August and work is expected to start on installing the infrastructure in towns across the borough within the next few months.
