Labour MPs voted to REFUSE the Conservative Motion to rescind Angela Raynor’s Policy Scrapping Winter Fuel Allowances. Millions of pensioners are now set to lose winter fuel payments after the attempt to block the cuts failed in Parliament.
The government won the vote on the plan to restrict the payments to all but the poorest pensioners by 348 votes to 228 - a majority of 120.
Fifty-two Labour MPs did not take part in the vote, including seven ministers - it is not known how many deliberately abstained or were absent from Parliament for another reason. Jon Trickett was the only Labour MP who voted against the government, on what he said could "be a matter of life and death" for his constituents.
Conservative MPs led a protest outside Parliament ahead of the crucial vote and have launched a petition to maintain pressure on the Labour Government to reconsider this policy.

In the meantime, any Pensioners affected by this decision are advised to seek advice regarding how to claim Pension Credit (many are entitled to this support but for a variety of reasons do not claim it).
